Danger. Congestion. Trauma.
These aren’t words that should be associated with one of Melbourne’s most iconic streets. As a hub for food, culture, live music and young people, health should be prioritised in Brunswick - not cars.
People in Brunswick deserve to bike, shop, and use public transport in safety. With a huge amount of on-street parks, 'dooring' incidents and a lack of accessible tram stops, Sydney Road encourages car use, and discourages healthy activity.
We believe that the removal of on-street parking along Sydney Road will have significant positive impacts on the health of the community and particularly the health of young people.
Instead, the parking lane of Sydney Road should accommodate a widened pedestrian area, accessible tram stops and a separated bike lane, similar to that along High Street in Northcote.
By removing on-street parking, VicRoads will reduce road trauma, decrease road congestion, improve air quality and promote active forms of transport like walking and cycling.
